SES and SMS Host Holiday Gift Shops SES and SMS Host Holiday Gift Shops: Just in time for the holiday season, the Holiday Gift Shop has arrived at Solvay Elementary School (SES) and Solvay Middle School (SMS). The Holiday Gift Shop is hosted by each schools PTO and allows students to buy special gifts for their friends and family. The Holiday Gift Shop for SES takes place throughout the day on December 14 and 15. Students are welcome to stop in to browse the selection throughout the school day with their classes. Volunteers are on hand during the event to help students select items. The program at SES is supplemented by Penguin Patch, with additional handmade items, donations, and purchases from local stores. Solvay Hosts Solvay Hosts "Take a Vet to School Day": Solvay Middle School (SMS) recently hosted the “Take a Veteran to School Day” program. The program, developed by The HISTORY® Channel, allows for the community to show veterans how much their service and sacrifice is appreciated, while also allowing students to develop a better understanding of our history. This goal is achieved by connecting veterans of all ages with students at schools throughout the country – with the help of the “Take a Veteran to School Day” program. To start the “Take a Veteran to School Day” program, students from SMS performed the national anthem. Weather Cancellations/Emergency Closings Procedures Reminder Weather Cancellations/Emergency Closings Procedures Reminder: With the recent winter weather in Central New York, we would like to take this opportunity to remind parents/guardians of Solvay Union Free School District’s weather cancellations/emergency closings procedures. In an effort to keep families informed, the district uses an automated emergency calling system. This system is used to contact parents and guardians in the event school will be delayed, closed, or dismissed early (after the start of the school day). It supplements the already established procedures of contacting the local news media. Families should ensure that all emergency contact information is updated with their child(ren)’s school(s) with any changes to phone numbers and addresses (including email) as soon as possible. Solvay Holds 1st OCC Advantage Celebration Solvay Holds 1st OCC Advantage Celebration: On Wednesday, November 9, Solvay High School held the 1 st Annual Onondaga Community College (OCC) Advantage Celebration. The celebration signified the launch of the OCC Advantage program, which was created in partnership with OCC in Syracuse, N.Y. and offers a full-tuition scholarship to OCC for students of the Solvay Union Free School District (UFSD) who meet program requirements. The Solvay Class of 2020, consisting of 143 ninth grade students, was invited along their families to attend the kick-off celebration. In order to be eligible for the program, students must meet a set of requirements while in high school and once accepted to OCC. Solvay High School Students to Perform Solvay High School Students to Perform "The King Stag" November 18 and 19: On November 18 and 19, Solvay High School will perform “The King Stag,” a play written by Carlo Gozzi and adapted by Shelley Berc and Andrei Belgrader. Audience members who appreciate fairy tales, romance, betrayal, death and destruction, along with a happy ending, will be sure to enjoy the qualities of this play.  “’The King Stag’ is an incredibly versatile show,” said Director Margaux Deverin. “It stretches and contracts to fit the demographic and ability level of its cast. So of course it was an excellent choice for our fall production this year.” “The King Stag” is written in the classic Commedia Dell'arte theatre style, which relies on physicality and using the body to display emotions. Solvay ES Fall Harvest Literacy Night Solvay ES Fall Harvest Literacy Night: The with the leaves changing colors and cooler temperatures on the horizon, Solvay Elementary School welcomed the changing of the seasons with the Fall Harvest Literacy Night. On Tuesday, October 25, families and students -- ranging from pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade -- were invited to attend the event at Solvay Elementary School.  The Fall Harvest Literacy Night was launched by a read aloud from Solvay Elementary School teachers. After that, students and their families visited four centers that ranged from exploration of music and art to a book swap. All centers were literacy based and gave students and families a chance to interact with their teachers and the Solvay community in an educational setting, while also sharing milk and cookies together. Community Serve-Ace: Dig Pink Volleyball Game Community Serve-Ace: Dig Pink Volleyball Game: For the month of October, a group of Solvay students formed the Solvay Community Serve-Ace Dig Pink Team. The team, comprised of students from across the Solvay district, used their skills on and off the volleyball court to work together to raise funds for finding a cure for breast cancer.  On Thursday, October 13, the team hosted and participated in the CNY Dig Pink Rally taking place across Central New York. The rally consisted of 16 local high schools throughout Central New York. As a part of the campaign, there were 10 matches throughout high school's across Central New York from September 27 to October 17.  By rallying together, these local high schools donated to The Side-Out Foundation to help researchers find a cure for breast cancer. This is a time to promote awareness and understanding of the important work performed by school board members. Solvay HS Al Merola Field Safety Solvay HS Al Merola Field Safety: Dear Community Members:  Over the summer, the Solvay Union Free School District completed updates to the Al Merola Field at Solvay High School. These updates included replacing 12-year-old artificial turf with a new A-Turf Titan field, featuring Solvay team graphics and our signature Solvay Bearcat blue and orange colors. Additionally, the track surrounding the field was resurfaced, and the stadium received new netting and goal posts. Pre-K Seats at Solvay UFSD Still Available! Pre-K Seats at Solvay UFSD Still Available!: Seats are still available for Solvay Union Free School District (UFSD) pre-kindergarten. Solvay UFSD offers a pre-kindergarten program for four-year-old children residing in the Solvay UFSD for the 2016-2017 school year. There is no charge to families, regardless of family income. This program is funded by special grants from the New York State Education Department.  Space is still available in this program and all children who are four years old on or before December 1, 2016 are welcome to apply. To apply, children must be residents of the Solvay UFSD and must have all required immunizations. Transportation is provided for students attending Solvay Elementary School once they are four years old. Solvay Honors Former Principal Mr. Michael Campolieta Solvay Honors Former Principal Mr. Michael Campolieta:  Solvay High School recently received a generous gift to honor well-known teacher, coach, administrator, and friend, Mr. Michael A. Campolieta. The gift was a portrait of the late Mr. Campolieta, also known by students and staff as “Mr. Camp.” The portrait serves to honor Mr. Campolieta’s time at Solvay High School, where he worked from 1956 to 1979. Mr. Campolieta is remembered for his dedication to the Solvay community, as well as his commitment to the students of Solvay High School. Mr. Campolieta’s portrait was donated to Solvay by the Campolieta family. Additionally, Solvay would like to thank the Solvay-Geddes Community Youth Center for distributing these backpacks to students in the Solvay district on Thursday, August 25. Solvay District Office Renovation Complete Solvay District Office Renovation Complete: (Solvay, NY) - Solvay Union Free School District is pleased to announce the completion of the newly renovated Solvay District Office, located in Solvay Middle School at 299 Bury Drive, Syracuse, NY 13209. Solvay 2016-2017 School Year Calendars Available Solvay 2016-2017 School Year Calendars Available: The 2016-2017 school year calendars for Solvay Union Free School District are now available online.  Printed copies of the Calendar of Events will be sent home with students on the first day of school, September 7. 2016-2017 One Page Calendar 2016-2017 Calendar of Events *On August 15, 2016, the Board of Education approved a calendar correction. November 10,  2016  has been changed to a Staff Development Day and a non-attendance day for all students .  *Please note that some of the calendars may be missing the pages for the months of February and March. Preview the Updates to Solvay HS's Al Merola Field Preview the Updates to Solvay HS's Al Merola Field: Summer has been a busy time on the Bearcats home field, as updates are underway for Al Merola Field at Solvay High School. Most recently, the 1 2-year-old  artificial  turf on Al Merola Field  was replaced with an A-Turf Titan field. The field now features Solvay team graphics, along with the signature Solvay blue and orange colors. Additional updates for the summer include the resurfacing of the track surrounding the field and new netting and goal posts within the stadium.
