Q.  What is a Mandated Reporter?

A.  A mandated reporter are those who are required by law, or mandated, to report suspected cases of child abuse and maltreatment.  NY State & the NY State Child Protective System recognize certain professionals as holding the important role of mandated reporter of child abuse or maltreatment. These professionals can be held liable by both the civil and criminal legal systems for intentionally failing to make a report.

Q. Who is considered a Mandated Reporter?

A.  The following is a list of SOME of the individuals identified as persons required by law to report suspected cases of child abuse & or maltreatment (Mandated Reporters);

  • School officials
  • Social workers & Counselors
  • Child care workers
  • Medical professionals
  • Law enforcement personnel
  • Day Care providers
  • Teachers
  • School Nurses
  • Coaches
  • Teaching Assistants & Teacher Aides
  • Librarians
