SMS Students Experience Tinsmithing
On Thursday, December 12th, Jack Gramlich came to Solvay MS and worked with our 5th grade classes to teach them about tinsmithing. Mr. Gramlich discussed the history of working with tin, demonstrated how to use tools such as tin snips, punches, and a break (used to fold the tin sheets). The students then chose a design, used the appropriate template to trace out the shape of the tin sheet they would need, and then cut them out using the tin snips. Students used hammers and punches to create designs on their candleholders, and then took them to Mr. Gramlich to be finished by having him solder parts together. The students all enjoyed the hands-on activity, and were able to take a nice, handcrafted gift home with them to cherish or share. Many thanks to Mr. Gramlich for coming in and providing our students with such a fun and educational experience, and to the PTO's support which allowed us to make it happen.![]() |
