 Solvay alumni Rachel DeNoble (Class of 1986) recently spoke to students from Solvay High School about careers in nursing. 
 
Ms. DeNoble is a pediatric palliative care nurse who supports children and their families dealing with a terminal illness. She works for Lifetime Care through the CompassionNet Program.

 On Friday, March 23, students from Solvay Middle School will celebrate the characters of Dr. Seuss and bring to life the musical “Seussical Jr.” SMS students invite their family and friends to take a trip with them, as they explore the world of Dr. Seuss and travel from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus. 
 
“Seussical Jr.” will debut at SMS on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The performance on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m. will be signed in American Sign Language. 
 
“Seussical Jr.” includes a large and diverse cast, consisting of 75 cast members from fifth to eighth grade, as well as about 40 pre-Kindergarten students participating.  ... |

 Solvay Middle School students become certificate babysitters! 
 
Thanks to the  21 st  Century Learning Grant Award , a group of SMS students recently completed round one of the babysitting course offered at SMS. Students spent time learning about best practices, while also having fun. At the end of the course, students received a certificate of completion for their hard work. Great job, students! |

 |  Solvay Students Participate in Perennial Math Competition: 
		
 
	 
		 
			 On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, 12 children from the Solvay Union Free School District attended the Perennial Math Competition at Jordan Elbridge High School. 
			 
			The Perennial Math Competition is held each year nationwide. The tournament provides children the opportunity to compete both individually and as a team. Students in grades 3-8 from local area schools attended this tournament. To help prepare students for this exciting event, Mrs. Alton, Ms. Ackerman, and Ms. Spicciati held math sessions after school.

Students from Solvay Elementary School recently learned about different animals and their environment, thanks to animal research projects. The projects were done as a part of the  21 st  Century Learning Grant Award . The group of students enjoyed the project and have proudly put their work on display in the art case at SES. |

On Monday, Feb. 26, TCC (Verizon) donated school supplies to ten teachers in the Solvay Union Free School District, as a part of their "Teachers Rock" program. 	 Congratulations to Ashley Bosco! Ashley was recently named  the News Channel 9/ Local SYR Athlete of the Week!   
 
The Athlete of the Week award is designed to honor Section III varsity members. The athletes are seen as students who embrace and embody the true meaning of student-athlete. In receiving the award, students are recognized for their accomplishments on and off the athletic field, the classroom, and the community. 
 
Ashley participates in a variety of sports at the Solvay Union Free School District. Most recently, she has participated in shot put for Solvay. She will be competing in shot put at the state championships this year, which will be held on March 3 on Stanton Island. The Solvay High School Drama Club is pleased to announce the spring musical, “Fiddler on the Roof.” The show will take place on Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. 
 
Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.  |  Solvay DECA Participates in Regional Competition: 
		
	Solvay DECA sent a record number of students to the regional competition this year held at LeMoyne College on Dec. 19, 2017. Solvay sent 33 students to compete at the event. Competition included an exam, which tests academic knowledge combined with performance on a business role-play. The exam takes place with one or more judges and allows the students apply their knowledge and use 21st Century Skills to solve a business problem and present their ideas. To prepare for this event, the students spent significant time after school improving their knowledge of business concepts and developing the skills needed to effectively present solutions to business challenges.

	 The Solvay Union Free School District holds true to the motto of “We develop confident, continual learners who are caring community members. Within the Solvay community, there are a number of people who keep this motto in mind and show us each day what makes Solvay special. Solvay High School freshman Jakob Ligoci is one of our community members who makes Solvay special. 
  
On Jan. 11, the SHS main office received a phone call from a parent whose daughter walks with a cane. SHS freshman Jakob Ligoci recognized this and on days that it snows he walks over three quarters of a mile to the girl’s house and shovels the sidewalk, so it is easier for her to get to school. The parent has offered to pay Jakob for his efforts, but he refuses any compensation.

Amanda (Libby) Phillips was recently named a National Board Certified Teacher. She has been teaching elementary physical education for 22 years, 20 of which have been with the Solvay Union Free School District. Prior to this, she taught for two years in her home state of Georgia. 
 
When asked what is one of her favorite things about coming to work each day, Ms. Phillips reflected on the joy she finds in “watching a student execute a skill for the first time.”

Richard (Rich) Gratien was recently named a National Board Certified Teacher. He has been teaching at the Solvay UFSD for ten years. Most of his time at Solvay UFSD has been as a business teacher at Solvay High School, though he did spend three years at Solvay Middle School teaching Family and Consumer Science. Currently, he teaches accounting, business math, business ownership, and sports marketing at SHS. Prior to his time with Solvay, Mr. Gratien worked in business for 25 years before becoming a teacher.

 |  What's that sound? SMS students learn the ukulele: 
		
	Those walking past the music rooms of Solvay Middle School may have recently heard a different kind of instrument being played. It has four strings, is smaller than most musical instruments, is fairly easy to learn, and has been featured in popular Disney movies like “Lilo and Stitch.” 
  
Students from SMS have been invited to take part in a ukulele class, taught by SMS Music Teacher Chris Jabot and funded through the  21 st  Century Learning Grant Award . The class consists of a group of ten students and meets once a week. At each class, students learn to tune, care for, and play a soprano ukulele.

A group of eighth grade students from the Lyncourt Union Free School District recently got a tour of their new high school from their peers -- Solvay High School students from the Lyncourt area.

 |  SMS students practice STEM experiments with 21st Century Learning Grant: 
		
	 The  21st Century Learning Center Grant Award  has allowed Solvay Middle School fifth grade students the opportunity to participate in the Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) program on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Mrs. Alton and Ms. Farrell. 
  
Learning about static electricity, the students created Halloween figures out of tissue paper and made them stand with friction from a balloon. Using their engineering skills, students worked in groups and pairs to create structures using various materials, such as marshmallows, toothpicks, spaghetti, gumdrops, and candy corn. The students measured the height of these structures and refined them to increase the height.

Students in the Solvay High School Advanced Drawing and Painting class recently completed a school project to benefit children from Syria. Students in Kim McGraw’s class painted and drew portraits of children from Syria, as a part of the Memory Project. The portraits will be delivered to the children in February. 
 
The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization that engages art students from schools throughout the United States. The project aims to create realistic portraits for orphaned and disadvantaged kids from different countries around the world. The latest project allows Solvay students to provide the children from Syria with meaningful pieces of personal history.

 Nila Merola shares her experiences with SHS students in the field of law. 
 
The Solvay High School counseling office presented a career seminar on the topic of law on Nov. 20, 2017. Nila Merola (SHS Class of 2004), an attorney in the Labor & Employment Department of Seyfarth Shaw LLP’s New York office, spoke to students about her experience in this field.  
  
Merola works with commercial litigation, regulatory investigations, and arbitration. She also highlighted her pro bono practice and past jobs as a litigator in a New York international law firm and a law clerk to the Honorable Gary L. Sharpe in the Northern District of New York. |
