An update on Gianna's Christmas Wish:
Have you heard about Gianna’s Christmas Wish? Gianna, a second-grade student at Solvay Elementary School, has had a busy holiday season. Her goal for Christmas this year is to bring Christmas cheer to those less fortunate, by bringing items to those in need this season.
So far, many classmates from throughout the Solvay Union Free School District, community members, and staff members have donated items to Gianna’s cause. On Monday, Dec. 17, the Solvay UFSD Board of Education presented Gianna with a bag of necessities at their board meeting, acknowledging all of her hard work. At the meeting, Gianna read a short speech about her cause and thanked everyone for their support.

Congratulations to our Solvay athletes! Four student athletes from Solvay were recently named to the Syracuse.com 2018 All-Central New York teams.
Two student athletes on the Solvay football team were named to the 2018 All-Central New York football teams . These athletes are Brock Bagozzi (Quarterback) and Blaine Franklin (Linebacker). The two were named to the 2018 All-CNY small schools team. Congratulations, Brock and Blaine!

We would like to take this time to thank our faculty, staff, students, teachers, and most importantly, the Solvay community. Thank you for all you to do make Solvay such a special place for our students!
While the holiday season allows us the opportunity to take the time to reflect, appreciate, and celebrate our accomplishments from this past year, it also gives us the chance to look forward to things to come. SES student asks for donations for homeless:
A second-grade student at Solvay Elementary School has reminded the Solvay community what the holidays are all about, in what has been described by her teacher as one of the most heartfelt gifts a person could ask for.
In a unique twist on tradition, Gianna does not want Santa to bring her any presents this year. Instead of unwrapping gifts found under her own Christmas tree, she wants to bring Christmas cheer to those less fortunate. With help from her teacher, Melissa Boileau, Gianna is asking for the community's help to collect items to bring warmth and comfort to those in need this season.
As soon as she heard about Gianna's Christmas wish, Mrs. Bolieau put out a call to action to the Solvay community.

Meet the Wee Deliver Team!
Just in time for the holiday season, Wee Deliver is up and running at Solvay Elementary School. Wee Deliver, a part of the SES internal post office and mail delivery service, is a program started by the United States Postal Service. The service, which officially launched in November, is staffed by select third graders from SES and supervised by Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Goodeve. Wee Deliver allows SES students the opportunity to learn more about the postal service, how to properly read and address letters, and the chance to spread acts of kindness and cheer.

Marilyn Farrell Named CNYRIC Featured Teacher:
Congratulations to Marilyn Farrell on being named a Central New York Regional Information Center Featured Teacher !
Ms. Farrell is a fourth grade teacher at Solvay Elementary School and has been with district for five years. Ms. Farrell was recognized as a leader in the use of technology in her classroom with her use of Google Sites. With the support of CNYRIC Instructional Technology Teacher Jen Wall , one of Ms. Farrell’s early projects has been centered around teaching her fourth-graders how to create online portfolios using Google Sites.

SHS Senior Marisa Presutto makes NYSSMA All-State Mixed Choir
Congratulations to SHS senior Marisa Presutto for making New York State School of Music Associations (NYSSMA) All-State Mixed Choir. She will represent the Solvay Union Free School District and attend the 2018 NYSSMA Winter Conference this coming weekend to participate in a four day rehearsal under the direction of Dr. Janet Galvan, from Ithaca College, with students from all over New York State chosen for this honor. Each student is chosen based on their Level 6 All-State NYSSMA scores from the previous spring solo festival.

Congratulations to Solvay Union Free School graduate, Aruasy Barrios! Aruasy was recently featured in the New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) newsletter for her work with the English Language Learners (EELs) program while at Solvay. Aruasy graduated in June 2018 with a Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, English, and American Sign language.

Pre-K students celebrate Halloween with special party:
Walking into the Solvay Middle School cafeteria recently, family and friends were greeted by a group of princesses, unicorns, dinosaurs, fire fighters, witches, and super heroes. It may have been a few days before the big day, but pre-Kindergarten students were ready and excited to welcome their family and friends to their Pre-K Halloween Party.
Prior to Halloween, the Solvay Union Free School District pre-K hosted a Halloween Party for all of the pre-K students. The event took place at the end of the school day and featured a DJ, who played plenty of fun songs for students throughout the afternoon. The party allowed pre-K students the chance to dress up in their Halloween costumes, play games, dance, and enjoy some snacks. The party also had a photo booth and plenty of props for students ...

Weather Cancellations/Emergency Closings Procedures Reminder:
Winter will soon be arriving to Central New York, and with it also comes the winter weather. With this in mind, we would like to take this opportunity to remind parents/guardians of Solvay Union Free School District’s weather cancellations/emergency closings procedures.
In an effort to keep families informed, the district uses an automated emergency calling system. This system is used to contact parents and guardians in the event school will be delayed, closed, or dismissed early (after the start of the school day). It supplements the already established procedures of contacting the local news media. (October 2018) – The Solvay Union Free School District (UFSD) has received their second prestigious award through the 2018 New York State Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) annual communications competition for their coverage of the Solvay Police Department giving back to two teachers at the Solvay UFSD for the holiday season. The district received an award of merit in the Excellence in Writing category in this year’s contest, for the article “ Solvay Police Dept. gives back to two Solvay UFSD teachers .”

SHS Senior paints mural to honor football player Joe Morris:

Over the summer, Solvay High School Senior Marissa Ramos worked to paint a mural of football player Joe Morris. Mr. Morris played football for the New York Giants and Syracuse University. On Sept. 22, 2018, SU retired the number 47 in honor of Mr. Morris. The day before, a party was held in Mr. Morris’s honor, where the mural was revealed. Marissa Ramos was commissioned by Mr. Denti from Alfred Denti Insurance to paint a mural in honor of Mr. Morris. Great job, Marissa!

SHS Concert Chorus sings for peace with SU:
On Tuesday Sept. 18, the Solvay High School Concert Chorus went to Syracuse University to sing with the Syracuse Women's Choir under the direction of Dr. Hillary Ridgley. The Solvay Chorus students have been learning the piece "Ukuthula" since the beginning of the school year and on Tuesday sang with the SU Women's Choir.
The two choirs teamed together to sing this piece in response to International Peace Day, held on Sept. 21. The piece "Ukuthula" is sung by choirs throughout the world on this day, to signify their belief in peace. This massive event is put together by the organization A Voice 4 Peace. Solvay and SU are just one of the many choirs that share in this day, showcasing that students at Solvay are A Voice 4 Peace!

SHS students take the classroom outside:
SHS students enrolled in SUNY-ESF's Global Environment and Biology classes visited the METRO Wastewater Treatment Facility and Onondaga Lake Visitor's Center on Tuesday Sept. 18. Students explored the complex system that cleans our wastewater and learned about the ecology and biology of the lake cleanup.
