What Makes Solvay Special: Jakob Ligoci

Jakob Ligoci receiving awardThe Solvay Union Free School District holds true to the motto of “We develop confident, continual learners who are caring community members. Within the Solvay community, there are a number of people who keep this motto in mind and show us each day what makes Solvay special. Solvay High School freshman Jakob Ligoci is one of our community members who makes Solvay special.

On Jan. 11, the SHS main office received a phone call from a parent whose daughter walks with a cane. SHS freshman Jakob Ligoci recognized this and on days that it snows he walks over three quarters of a mile to the girl’s house and shovels the sidewalk, so it is easier for her to get to school. The parent has offered to pay Jakob for his efforts, but he refuses any compensation.

At the Solvay UFSD Board of Education meeting on Jan. 22, the Board of Education and Solvay Superintendent Jay Tinklepaugh thanked Jakob for being so thoughtful. The Board presented him with a plaque for his efforts.

Great job, Jakob! Thank you for showing us what makes Solvay special!
