SMS Students Visit Great Swamp Conservancy

Fourth-graders at Solvay Middle School (SMS) recently took a field trip to get a little closer to nature. SMS students visited the Great Swamp Conservancy (GSC) in Canastota, N.Y. Students met a guide at the Nature Center at the GSC and headed out on to the path to learn more about the GSC.

The GSC’s mission is educate people about the world around them, while promoting outdoor recreation and preserving biological diversity. Their mission also focuses on conserving and managing natural resources in the Oneida Lake and Lake Ontario Watersheds. With this mission in mind, students from learned about the importance of wetlands, wildlife, and natural resource conservation.

Students were also able to get up close and personal with some of the animals that live in and around the swamp. Thanks to the GSC, students were able to better understand and appreciate their natural environment and the world around them.
