Students Prep Vegetarian Meals in “Beyond Salad” Vegetarian Cooking Class

What do vegetarians eat? Students from the Solvay Union Free School District recently learned more about being a vegetarian and got firsthand experience preparing vegetarian meals, thanks to a vegetarian cooking class, “Beyond Salad.”

With the "Beyond Salad" class, hosted by Solvay teacher Mrs. Russell, students met every Thursday starting at the end of November and concluding before the holiday recess in December. “Beyond Salad” was funded by the 21st Century Learning Center Grant Award and gave students the opportunity to have hands-on experience each week preparing meals and learning more about vegetarian meal options available.

The “Beyond Salad” class concluded on Dec. 15 with a dinner party, hosted by Mrs. Russell and her family. At the party, students dined on homemade pizzas, snacks, and dessert, while chatting about future plans and reminiscing about their time at the Solvay UFSD – including the good old days at Solvay Middle School.
