Thank you to Lena Rose Orlando and the retirees of the Solvay UFSD


On Monday, June 19, the Solvay UFSD celebrated eight employees retiring from the district, as well as Board of Education President Lena Rose Orlando. Please join us in congratulating them on their retirement and thanking them for their service to Solvay UFSD!

Lena Rose Orlando - Lena Rose Orlando served on the Solvay UFSD Board of Education for 19 years. For the last ten years, she served as president of the BOE. During her time on the BOE, she worked hard as an advocate for the students, staff, and community of the Solvay UFSD. The Solvay UFSD is appreciative to Lena for her time and dedication the district. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Lena!

Josephine (Josie) Aldrous – Josie has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 26 years. Her peers have called her an exceptional employee and team player, who would always show up early for work with a cheerful attitude and smile. At Solvay UFSD, Josie was always willing to help her co-workers and at all times could be relied upon to get something done. Thank you for all you have done for our students and school community, Josie!

Joanne (Ellen) Corning – Joanne has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 16 years as a Teaching Assistant. Thank you for all you have done for our students and school community, Joanne!

Maria Fenton – Maria has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 11 years. During this time, Maria has had numerous accomplishments, from teaching French and Spanish Levels 1 through 4 to mentoring staff and assisting with curriculum development for the Foreign Language department. Maria is a National Board Teacher and a Regional Director. Most recently, Maria worked with New York State representatives to develop the Seal of Biliteracy, helping six students successfully complete the requirements for the Seal.

Maria inspired her students, encouraging many of them to study and travel at an international level. She advocated for the Foreign Language program and helped to develop enthusiasm and interest with her students in studying the language and culture. At Solvay High School, Maria served as the National Honor Society Advisor, Key Club Advisor, and Spanish Club Advisor, working to coordinate, plan, and participate in many activities and events. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Maria!

Paula Kopp - Paula has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 32 years. Paula began her teaching career with the Solvay UFSD as a health and physical education teacher in 1985 at the Hazard Street Middle School.

Over the past 32 years with Solvay UFSD, Paula has accomplished many things. She completed her administration program from SUNY Cortland and began her administrative career as an Assistant Principal in Solvay Middle School. During the 2004 reconfiguration and renovation, Paula acted as the Interim Principal of Lakeland Elementary. In 2006, Paula was appointed to the position of Principal of Solvay Elementary School. Paula led and facilitated several programs and initiatives including Positive Behavioral Interactions and Supports, also referred to as PBIS. In 2014, Paula returned to SMS as the Principal of sixth to eighth grade, where she once again led, facilitated, and implemented several programs.

As a teacher and administrator, Paula always supported and encouraged her students. She mentored teachers, staff, and students, helping them to achieve great things in their classrooms. Paula was also a head coach of several athletic teams, including softball, volleyball, track, basketball, and soccer, encouraging her students in competition and sportsmanship. As a teacher, Paula inspired many students. She has been an advocate for physical education and health, working to develop a high level of enthusiasm and interest with her students in developing their minds and bodies. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Paula!

Sandra (Cindy) Marquart - Cindy has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 19 years. She began her teaching career in the Solvay UFSD at Hazard Street Middle School. Over the years, she has influenced the lives of thousands of children. Her peers refer to her as a very caring teacher who opened up her classroom and her heart to all students – especially those needing extra support and guidance. Cindy is a team player who was always willing to step in and help cover classes, tutor homebound students, or chaperone dances.
 
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she was the advisor for Student Council for many years. She also worked with students on the Character Education Team, Builders Club, and the Extra Classroom Activity Group. During the summer months, she worked with students at SMART Camp and most recently the Inquiry U summer program. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Cindy!

Elia McClusky -- Elia has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 27 years as a Custodial Worker. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Elia!

Cheryl Parsons – Cheryl has worked at the Solvay UFSD for 19 years as a Teaching Assistant. During this time, Cheryl has assisted students, teachers, and staff with classroom instruction and programs.

Cheryl has been an integral part of the special education staff, working with the students’ individual needs and always willing to assist in the classroom in any way that she could. Her peers have called her a supportive, caring, and encouraging figure to students. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Cheryl!

Merton (Mert) Shaw - Mert has worked at the Solvay UFSD for ten years as a school bus driver. During his last few years at Solvay UFSD, Mert was responsible for transporting students with special transportation needs. His peers refer to him as a hard worker who will be missed. Thank you for all you have done for our students, staff, and school community, Mert!
