Art Camp, Summer Band Camp, and InquiryU available to Solvay UFSD students

What are your summer plans? Art Camp at Solvay Middle SchoolSolvay Summer Band Camp, and InquiryU are free and open to students in the Solvay Union Free School District.

Art Camp at Solvay Middle School –

Feeling creative this summer? Get ready for a week full of drawing, painting, and printmaking! SMS student’s grades six to nine are invited to attend Art Camp at SMS, which will allow them to explore a variety of art making techniques. Art Camp will run from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4 and is free and open to all students in grades six to nine.

Two sessions will be available to SMS students. Session 1 will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for students entering sixth and seventh grade. Session 2 will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for students entering eighth and ninth grade. All participants must provide their own transportation to SMS.

Solvay Summer Band Camp –

For students looking to get back into the concert band setting during the summer months, Solvay Band has the solution! Solvay Summer Band Camp will run from Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 11 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Solvay Summer Band Camp and is free and open to all Solvay Band students.

Serving as a link between the end of one school year and the start of the next, the Solvay Summer Band Camp provides musicians with the opportunity to practice and perform together during the summer months. Students will strengthen their skills and gain confidence in an ensemble concert band setting.

The week of rehearsals culminate in a final concert for friends and family on Friday, August 11 at 2:00 p.m. – we hope to see you there!

Inquiry University at Solvay Middle School - 

Looking for a new, fun project to tackle over the summer months? Inquiry University (InquiryU) might be the answer!

InquiryU is a program jointly offered by the Solvay UFSD and Syracuse University. The program will consist of Solvay teachers, SU faculty, and SU graduate students, working with students in small groups to strengthen their writing skills.  

InquiryU consists of two parts. The first part is a three three-week writing program, which is open to students in grades five through eight. InquiryU Part One is designed to allow students to explore how writing can be used in several subjects, including math, science, and social studies. This program will be held from Monday through Thursday, starting July 10 to July 28.

InquiryU Part Two is open to students in grades five to six and consists of a four-week intensive ELA support program. This program includes one-to-one reading and writing tutoring and small group literacy instruction. InquiryU Part Two will be held Monday through Friday, starting July 3 to July 28. Students choosing to enroll in InquiryU Part Two must also enroll in InquiryU Part One.

InquiryU will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for both sessions. The program is free and open to all eligible students. Transportation to SMS will be provided, along with a mid-morning snack and all supplies needed for participation.
